Type 2 diabetes is often viewed as a progressive chronic disease requiring increasing medication and management of complications over time. Too Deadly for Diabetes challenges that expectation. Since 2009, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people participating in this community-led, 10-week lifestyle program have demonstrated that substantial weight loss and major improvements in type 2 diabetes are achievable, including cessation or substantial reduction of insulin and, for some, remission. The program combines practical nutrition, physical activity and education with culturally safe delivery, community leadership, personalised support, and a strong focus on building confidence through achievable change. Importantly, the impact extends beyond clinical measures, with success creating optimism and demonstrating to families and communities what is possible. Too Deadly for Diabetes provides a powerful example of what can happen when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are supported with the knowledge, opportunity and environment to succeed.
